The Girl Choir of South Florida
The Girl Choir of South Florida is the premier singing ensemble for girls and young women ages 6 through 18. Our top ensembles, Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, will present an exploration of the two branches of literature (poetry and prose) and their narrative and lyrical aspects. Both poetry and prose lend themselves to storytelling. Several pieces will be more narrative in nature, such as Edward Lear’s charming poem “The Owl and the Pussycat” with music composed by Joan Whittemore. Other pieces will exhibit more lyrical trends found in poetry and prose, like W.B. Yeats’ “The Cloths of Heaven” with music composed by Eleanor Daley. Finally, Stephen Paulus’s “I Cannot Dance, O Lord”, a setting of a Christian mystic’s text, occupies the figurative space between poetry and prose, blending together the narrative and the lyrical. The focal point of the concert is a commissioned work that exemplifies the power of literature on the creation of beautiful choral music and how music relates to the redemptive power of the written word.
